Modern Urban Chicken Coop Design Plans

How to design your own DIY modern chicken coop

In early 2020 I had this crazy idea to build a chicken coop that felt modern and contemporary, for my small, urban backyard. I would design it in Adobe Illustrator, with very little carpentry experience. Could I do it? Would it work? I started recording this journey of May of 2020. This is the story of building the coop, and raising chickens for eggs.

In early 2020, this wasn’t the most unique idea—many people were trying to figure out how to raise chickens, and grow their own food early in the pandemic. As such, pre-made kits for chicken coops were nearly impossible to find or order online.

Our neighborhood has several wooded areas nearby, with plenty of foxes. I’m well aware that some of our neighbors had lost their chickens to the foxes, so I was very intent on my coop being “fox proof.” With that goal in mind, I knew most pre-made coops wouldn't be heavy-duty enough to keep my chickens safe!

Not to mention, as a designer, I had some really specific aesthetic goals for the look of the chicken coop.

So I went my go-to graphic design program, Adobe Illustrator, to concept, plan, and design a coop for our backyard.
